Cruise lines price their cruises based on availability, so sailings that are selling better than planned see price INCREASES as the sail date approaches, and sailings that are selling worse than expected see price REDUCTIONS as the sail date approaches. Therefore, it's impossible to determine if you should wait for a better price to book your cruise without knowing how a particular sailing is selling.

Before a cruise departs, every cruise line is required by maritime law to conduct a safety briefing called a "muster drill." The term "muster" refers to assembling, which is exactly what the drill involves—bringing passengers and crew together. The purpose of the drill is to ensure everyone knows the emergency procedures and where to go in case of an emergency.
Before the pandemic, these drills took place on the ship's deck or in public gathering areas. Passengers were typically asked to bring their life jackets from their cabins to a designated location, where they would learn how to properly wear them and meet others in their group. After about 15–20 minutes of instructions, the drill would end, and everyone could return to relaxing at the bar or by the pool.
Since the pandemic, many cruise lines have introduced a more convenient method. Now, the safety drill is often conducted through video instructions shown on cabin TVs and screens around the ship, making the process simpler and more comfortable for passengers
Most cruise ships provide laundry services for an additional fee. Depending on your loyalty status with the cruise line, you might be eligible for discounts or special flat-rate offers, like filling a bag for one set price instead of paying per item. Some cruise lines, such as Holland America, Princess, and Seabourn, also have self-service laundry facilities. These usually have a fee, and detergent is available for purchase onboard. Self-service laundry is more commonly found on ships with longer itineraries, allowing you to pack lighter.
To locate the laundry facilities, check the ship’s deck map, but note they may be on a different deck from your cabin.
Packing Tip: Layer dryer sheets between your clean clothes in your suitcase to keep them smelling fresh during travel. You can also save the sheets to use when doing laundry on the ship.

After several delays, it looks like the transition to REAL ID is finally happening. Starting on May 7, 2025, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will require residents aged 18 and older to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification to pass airport security and board domestic flights within the United States.
A valid passport will also work, so if you already have one, you're set. However, if you don’t, it’s time to ensure your driver's license meets the new requirements.
What Is a REAL ID? Think of a REAL ID as an upgraded driver’s license. It’s designed to standardize identification across states, enhancing security measures. A REAL ID is easily identifiable by a star on the top of the card. While most states use a gold star, states like California and Maine have slight variations, but the star is the key feature.
A REAL ID doesn’t replace a passport; it simply becomes the new standard for driver’s licenses. Without it, you won’t be able to board a domestic flight unless you use another form of federally accepted identification.
How to Get a REAL ID
To obtain a REAL ID, you’ll need to visit the same place where you’d renew your driver’s license, such as your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or driver’s license service center. Some states may have designated locations for processing REAL ID applications.
Here’s what you’ll need:
• Proof of identity and legal status (e.g., birth certificate or passport).
• Proof of Social Security number (e.g., Social Security card or tax document).
• Proof of residency (e.g., utility bills, bank statements).
Only original documents or certified copies will be accepted, so leave the photocopies at home. After applying, you’ll receive a temporary paper ID while waiting for the official REAL ID to arrive by mail.
The cost is comparable to renewing your standard driver’s license, so no major surprises there.
What Happens If You Don’t Get a REAL ID?
If you don’t upgrade to a REAL ID by May 7, 2025, your standard driver’s license won’t suffice for passing airport security. This could make flying domestically impossible unless you have another acceptable form of ID, such as:
• A valid U.S. passport
• U.S. Department of Defense ID
• Permanent resident card
• Border crossing card
• Federally recognized tribal photo ID
• Enhanced Driver’s License (available in select states)
•
If you’re a frequent traveler with a passport, you might choose to skip the REAL ID altogether and just use your passport for flights.
Can You Cruise with a REAL ID Instead of a Passport?
If you’re planning a cruise, it’s important to understand that a REAL ID alone isn’t enough to board. While many cruise lines allow U.S. citizens to sail without a passport on what’s called a "closed-loop" cruise (departing and returning to the same U.S. port), you’ll still need additional documents. Typically, this means a REAL ID combined with an original birth certificate.
For international cruises or those requiring air travel to reach the departure port, having a passport is the safest and most versatile option.
Final Thoughts
The shift to REAL ID is a big change for travelers, especially those who frequently fly or cruise. Ensuring your identification is up to date will save you headaches and make your travel plans seamless. Whether you’re cruising the Caribbean or flying to your next adventure, now is the time to prepare for the upcoming requirements.
